Skein Info

Skein Information

Our yarns are sold as skeins unless otherwise stated. We suggest that before knitting your yarn you wind it into a ball.

Our skeins are usually tied using the ends and 2 additional ties, these ties maybe white or another colour not included in your colour way. Some times these ties can be seen in the product images.

Our hand dyed yarns are rinsed thoroughly, but we recommend you wash hand dyed yarns separatly for the first wash after knitting/crochet/weaving to avoid any colour transfer.

Creating a ball

There are many was to create a ball from a skein, but this is a simple way to do this at home if you have no other tools for winding.

1. Un twist the skein, giving you a large loop of yarn.

2. If you have someone to help you, ask them to hold their hands apart and place the skein around their wrists. If you are on your own sit down with your knees apaart and place the skein over your knees.

3. Locate the ties, usually 4, and undo them. 2 of the ties will usually be the ends of the yarn.

4. Take one end of the yarn and carefully start to unravel it from the skein, winding it around your fingers or hand as you go.

5. as you wind up your ball, be careful not to tangle your skein, try and keep it all in the loop shape.

6. Many knitters like to wind their yarn around the ball in different directions, creating a tight spherical ball, which is easy to knit from. If you decide to do this, we suggest you wait until you are ready to knit from it, as some fibres loose their soft texture if stored like this for long periods.

We do provide the option of having your skeins wound into a centre pull ball by us, using our ball winder, this will enable you to knit/crochet from both ends of the same ball. If you would like a skein you have bought wound into a ball please also add the ball winding product to your order.
